Fungal Nail Treatment

Fungal Nail Treatment

Laser therapy for fungal nails

Over 2 Million people in Australia will suffer from Fungal toenails this year!

Fungal nails are discoloured, unattractive and many people are embarrassed to have open shoes in public. Often referred to as “nail rot”, podiatrists describe theses nails as discoloured, often thick and brittle appearing yellow brown and even black. The nails frequently has a foul odour smell similar to blue cheese.

Conventional treatments are limited with expensive but often ineffective topical solutions, requiring daily and often twice daily applications and filing or requiring prescriptions for oral medications which not only taken over a long term they can often have significant side effect for many people and in combination with many other medications.

Laser therapy is the latest development in treatment for fungal nails. Laser therapy is safe, effective and fast and an easy alternative to other pharmaceutical and topical treatments. For this reason, laser therapy is the treatment of choice for many people with fungal nails.

Treatment using Laser therapy:

Laser therapy provides a comfortable, safe, controlled treatment by having little to no thermal effect (heat) on the skin, nail, and nail bed thus providing one of the safest most effective treatments in the industry. Most importantly it has TGA approval.

  • We recommend attending for a general treatment where all nails are cut and filed to remove fungal spores prior to the medical laser treatment (approx 1/2 hour) consult.
  • Then to return within 1 week to perform the 45-60 minute laser treatment involving passing a Medical grade laser over all nails to kill the fungus, without any damage to your skin or nails.
  • Usually requires 1-3 treatments depending on the severity and success of at home implementation of cleaning of shoes, socks, bedding etc.
  • Please bring thongs, sandals or shoes with no material over the toes to wear home. An information of after care will be provided at this consult and is recommended to enhance the Laser treatment and the nail recovery.

Is there a follow up required for laser therapy

  • We recommended in 4 weeks. At this appointment all nails will be cut and filed/burred again and our podiatrist will recommend if further treatment is needed.
  • If another laser treatment is advised, depending on the amount of nails affected, you may either have the laser at this time or you will need to return within a week for the laser treatment.
  • 2nd or 3rd laser treatments are shorter and involve only treating the affected nails
